I am often asked whether one’s scars will disappear. Most plastic surgery procedures require incisions and incisions heal by forming a scar. One handy way to think of it is that scar is the body’s glue that fuses skin (and other parts) together. Unfortunately scars are permanent but good news- they fade with time. There are a number of factors that go into a scar’s appearance. Plastic surgeons like to hide scars in preexisting wrinkles or along the borders of anatomical body parts. Technique can make a difference as can tension on a scar. Sun exposure can play a role. Complications such as an infection can sometimes affect a scar. One of the main factors is one’s genetics, unfortunately we can’t change that but we have a number of techniques to minimize scars. But our best friend is time, in almost all cases scars fade over a number of months and even years.
