What Is Fat Grafting?
Fat grafting (fat transfers, fat injections) is a commonly used technique for adding volume to areas of the face that have begun to droop or have taken on a flatter or hollowed appearance due to facial volume loss as a result of aging. The facial volume is restored using the patient’s own natural body fat that is harvested from another area of the body with an abundance of excess fat.

Facial Rejuvenation Using Facial Fat Filling
We can utilize this technique for augmenting the cheek area. It is also used in many other areas from the brows to the lips. This can be a stand alone procedure performed under local anesthesia in an office setting or can be used as a sub-technique when one undergoes face lifting or eyelid surgery.
In more than half of the facelifts that I perform, I utilize fat transfers to replenish volume in faces in addition to surgically lifting the tissues. Facial fat injections are small drops of fat injected utilizing a special needle called a cannula.
With time, some of the fat will establish itself in the new area providing volume to that area. The amount of fat to survive in an area depends on the different anatomical sites. The cheeks, for example, are excellent areas for volume enhancement with fat grafting with high fat “take”.

How Facial Fat Filling Is Performed
Fat grafting requires obtaining fat cells elsewhere on your body- possibly from under the chin if there is some there. Other potential areas are from around the belly button or the love handle regions. This is done with a mini liposuction technique, usually with local anesthesia unless one is undergoing another procedure with general anesthesia.
The fat is processed and ultimately placed in small syringes and then injected into the area on the face that requires filling. Technique is extremely important in the amount of “take” of the fat, and small drops are carefully and slowly placed in the desired areas.
What to Expect During Recovery from Facial Fat Filling
Care is needed in the post procedure period to avoid undue pressure or rubbing in the area to allow the fat to heal in the selected area. There may be some bruising and a small amount of swelling in the treated area although this tends to resolve quickly. Results tend to be quite satisfying for this relatively simple technique!
